About Fitzroy
Inner-suburban Fitzroy is Melbourne's artistic, design and intellectual hub. The streets have a dynamic mix of the alternative and artistic. Fitzroy is also one of the focal points for the annual Melbourne Fringe Festival held over two weeks in September and October.
Brunswick Street
Brunswick Street is lined with quaint and quirky shops, and eclectic art is on offer in studios, galleries and workshops. You can wander through pop culture at alternative bookstores or browse through second-hand stores to find a bargain. Every Saturday, the Rose Street Artists' Market, just a block from 32 Kerr apartments, showcases over 70 of Melbourne's best designers and artists. Brunswick Street's cool cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars offer anything at any time, serving all-day breakfasts and coming alive at night.
Lygon Street
Lygon Street is one of the great food precincts of Melbourne. It has its origins in the early immigration of Italian migrants. Lygon Street has the biggest selection of Italian restaurants and cafes of anywhere in Australia, and was the first suburb in Melbourne to promote eating outdoors and tables and chairs on footpaths. Lygon Street is a great place to spend a warm summer's evening with a group of friends, especially if you're sitting in the garden cafe on one of the terraces that line the street.
Carlton Gardens
The lush, beautiful and historic Carlton Gardens are a Melbourne icon, and the setting for the contrasting structures of the historic Royal Exhibition Building and the contemporary Melbourne Museum. The gardens are a spectacular example of Victorian-era parkland, with breathtaking avenues of trees, charming ponds and floral beds, and the elaborate Hochgurtel fountain.
Fitzroy Gardens
Fitzroy Gardens are one of the major 19th century landscaped city gardens in Australia and form a wonderful transition between the city and East Melbourne. The Gardens are a popular tourist attraction, with historic buildings, sculptures and horticulture, and are bounded by Clarendon Street, Albert Street, Lansdowne Street, and Wellington Parade.
